Another Growth Spurt – 6 months

Pixie is going through ANOTHER growth spurt! But it is easier this time! Pixie started eating like mad just the other day, she still gets her regular feeds from me but she has also started eating real food (well, puree). She gets porridge for breakfast, fruit for her mid-morning meal and fish and vegetables with potato or pasta for her lunch and dinner. She just loves the food, no matter what we give her she eats with great gusto. She focuses on … [Read more...]

Food Glorious Food

We have finally had success. Pixie has started eating (properly). yesterday when we were having breakfast in our friends kitchen I decided to give her some banana. As we have not been very successful with the whole food thing lately I wasn't expecting her to do anything. We have been giving her food every day but she has struggled with the whole 'keeping food in her mouth and swallowing' bit of the process. But yesterday she looked me in the … [Read more...]

Make your own baby food!

So I have made my first batch of baby food. I made parsnip puree. Delicious! Well done me!2 medium sized parsnips, boiled and mushed together with rapeseed oil and some water (from the pot that I boiled the parsnip in). This was frozen last night in an ice-tray.Today we had our first meal. Erin didn't seem completely convinced but she must have had at least 1 spoonful. She has also learned how to drink from a mug. We bought a proper baby mug in … [Read more...]

Introducing Solid Food

As I have written previously, experts agree that you shouldn't be looking at introducing solids until baby is at least 6 months old. And there are good reasons for this ... Babies that are too you have poor control of their throat and tongue muscles. This makes swallowing difficult and can cause choking or gagging.Their tongue thrust reflex is still strong and can make solid feeding difficult. This is evident if they push out the food with their … [Read more...]

Is your baby ready for solid food ?

Maybe she even opens her mouth, or tries to grab your spoon? Besides making you feel guilty as you enjoy your dinner, this behaviour indicates that she may be ready for solid food. Does your baby seem hungrier than usual, appearing dissatisfied after her usual milk feeds? Once you've ruled … [Read more...]

So when should I introduce baby’s first foods?

This is a very important question for all new parents, yet is one that will often bring you an overwhelming amount of conflicting answers. Many medical professionals still advise introducing baby's first foods anywhere from 4 to 6 months. However, this is a subject that has been hugely researched of late and the current recommendation from the World Health Organisation (WHO) is that: no solid foods are introduced to baby for the first 6 … [Read more...]

Breast Feeding – Recommendations

Lately I have been researching the introduction of solid foods to babies. As a result of my reading I ended up reading about lots of other topics as well, such as breast feeding. I found really interesting information on UNICEF's site.UNICEF explains that breastfed children have at least six times greater chance of survival in the early months than non-breastfed children. They also state that breastfeeding drastically reduces deaths from acute … [Read more...]

Food for the first time!

In the past week I have started giving Pixie some jucie for the first time, just a tea spoon at a time. It has been a very interesting experience because I had no idea how she would respond. It's safe to say that she wasn't that impressed. She made all sorts of faces and all the juice just ran down her face.Today we tried banana. Same thing happened, she made faces and pushed the banana out of her mouth with her tongue. I never thought she would … [Read more...]
